You haven’t done well with oil money, Clinton tells Nigeria

It was a stark reminder of the wastefulness of the nation’s leaders as former United States (U.S.) President Bill Clinton declared that Nigeria had failed to properly use her rich natural resources.

Clinton did not mince words as he told Nigeria: “You haven’t done well with your oil money.”

According to Clinton, Nigeria cannot afford to fail because if she does, the consequences for Africa would be disastrous. He challenged Nigerian leaders to create economic opportunities for the majority of the citizens.

The former U.S. president spoke while answering stakeholders’ questions at the 18th This Day Awards organised by the This Day Newspaper management to honour 18 teachers for their commitment to duty. The well-attended event was held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta.

Clinton urged Nigeria to find a way of bringing home her intellectuals, who he said, were scattered all over the world, to assist in developing the country instead of using their talents to develop other nations.

Ethnic Sentiments: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Accused of Tribalism by Nothern Group!

Northern Civil Society Coalition on Tuesday in Kaduna knocked the  Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, of playing an ethnic game to rob the North of chairmanship of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

They called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately  intervene in the matter. The coalition, led by human rights activist and President of Civil Rights Congress, Mallam Shehu Sani,  while commending former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, for resigning his membership  of the committee set up by the finance minister  to appoint the chairman of FIRS, queried the rationale behind the appointment of a new chairman when a northerner was already in the position.

Pope Benedict Farewell: Thousands Expected

The Pope will officially stand aside on Thursday evening

The Pope stunned the Catholic Church earlier this month when he announced he no longer had the mental or physical strength to carry on in the role. He will officially stand aside on Thursday evening, the first pope to do so in 600 years.

He will leave the Vatican and fly by helicopter to the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, until renovations have been completed on a monastery inside the Vatican walls. The Pope will live out the rest of his days in the new monastery in prayer and meditation.

At precisely 8pm (Rome time) the villa gates at Castel Gandolfo will close and the Swiss Guard will withdraw - a symbol that Pope Benedict XVI's papacy is over. Benedict will then be known as Emeritus Pope and wear a simple white cassock and brown shoes rather than his trademark red loafers.

After the general audience today, the Pope will meet a select group of heads of state and make final preparations for his departure. On Thursday morning, he will bid farewell to his cardinals who will begin a series of meetings to determine his successor. The date for the conclave - when eligible cardinals vote in secret in the Sistine Chapel - has yet to be announced.

Bobby Brown Gets Jail For Drink Driving

Bobby Brown, the former husband of the late Whitney Houston, has been sentenced to 55 days in jail after admitting to drink driving. Brown pleaded no contest, an admission of guilt under California law, to driving under the influence and driving on a suspended licence in October in Los Angeles.

Police said they stopped the singer after seeing him driving erratically, and that he failed a field sobriety test. The New Edition singer was also sentenced to four years' probation, ordered to install an ignition interlock device and to attend an alcohol counselling programme.

Brown and Houston divorced in 2007 after 15 years of what Houston later described as a drug and alcohol-fuelled marriage. Houston drowned accidentally in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February 11, 2012, from the effects of heart disease and cocaine.

CCTV punch attacks: Nigerian Michael Ayoade jailed for 4 years

The 35 year old Nigerian man, Michael Ayoade, who was caught on CCTV punching a teenage girl and a female student, and leaving them unconscious on the ground, has been jailed for four years.

Michael attacked female student, Daniella Montieth, in 2011, without any provocation. She was taken to the hospital with a broken tooth after he hit her in the side of the head at Plaistow tube station. Then on November 13th 2012 he jogged up behind a 16-year-old girl in the High Street and punched her in the head. The teenager fell to the ground, breaking three of her teeth. (pictured above)

Ayoade was arrested shortly after the attack on the teenager

During his trial, Ayoade said the teenager had "looked at him in a rude way" and that he could not go through the rest of the day having taken "an insult from a little person like that".

Ayoade was yesterday sentenced to four years in prison for the attack on the teenager and 19 months for punching the student. The two sentences will run concurrently. View the CCTV footage after the cut...

Kanye and Kim put their home up for sale?

About a month ago, it was reported that parents-to-be Kim and Kanye plunked down $11 million for a 10,000-square-foot Bel Air mansion.

Now it's being reported that the new Italian style home has been quietly put back on the market. That is according to The Real Estate Stalker.

Property records do indeed now reveal that in late January 2013 the couple - or at least Miss Kardashian through the same trust connected her former faux-Tuscan in the Bev Hills P.O.—coughed up an undisclosed amount of moolah for the big ol' Bel Air Crest crib in question that sits on three-quarters of an acre with scenic canyon and city views and was last listed with a $10,750,000 price tag.
However, don't count on K.K and Kanye to gut or expand the five bedroom and 6.5 bathroom mock-Med McMansion, as was previously reported they planned to do. In fact, don't even count on them moving into the damn house because, according to Patty, they are already in escrow to flip the pricey pad for about a million bucks more than the still unknown amount they paid for the place just three weeks ago.

Anenih Returns as PDP BOT Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected a former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih, to chair its Board of Trustees (BoT), a position which he occupied until 2007 when he was ousted in a palace coup carried out by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his associates.Anenih was elected after a meeting of the board, held at the Presidential Villa, which ended in the wee hours of today.

The meeting, the third in the last three months, began at about 8.45 pm and ended at about 12.45am.
However, contrary to the previous ones that had been acrimonious, the latest meeting was a sort of coronation for Anenih, a sign that the party had resolved all the contending issues that had stalled previous efforts to replace Obasanjo, who resigned from the position in April 2012.
The board was eventually able to elect a chairman in the person of Anenih followed the report of the verification committee, set up during the last botched meeting, and chaired by former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, that streamlined the membership of the board which was over 90.
Emerging from the meeting, Anenih told State House correspondent that he was happy to be the chairman of the BoT, which is "the conscience of the party and comprises elders, men of integrity, honour and experience as members."
He said with his election, "PDP is on the move again" and cannot be stopped by any merger of political parties.
He described the merger of opposition parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a pack of weak blocks that cannot be used to construct an enduring edifice.

"APC is not a threat to PDP. We never had a strong opposition. Let us see how strong APC will be," he said while promising to work tirelessly to resolve the crisis in the PDP.
The PDP in a statement after the BoT meeting, described the unanimous election of Anenih as a bold step towards ensuring peace and harmony in the party.
In a congratulatory message signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP expressed confidence that Anenih’s antecedents as a mobiliser and consensus builder over the years will contribute to the   stability of the party.
“Chief Anenih’s tireless participation and critical role in the formation of the PDP places him in good stead to provide wise counsel and direct the influential Board of Trustees to follow the noble ideals of the founders of the party. His wealth of experience and acclaimed reputation as a democrat and consensus builder are assets that the party needs at this critical point in our democratic evolution,” the PDP said.

Cardinal Keith O'brien, UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric steps down amid claims of 'inappropriate behaviour'

74 year old Cardinal Keith O'Brien, UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric, resigned his position as the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh today Monday February 25th after being accused of 'inappropriate conduct' towards fellow priests.

Three priests and a former priest reported him to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behaviour stretching back 30 years. One of the priests alleged that the cardinal developed an inappropriate relationship with him, resulting in a need for long-term psychological counseling. Another one claimed O'Brien made an inappropriate approach after night prayers. The four demanded O'Brien's immediate resignation.

O'Brien denied the allegations and had been expected to continue in his post as archbishop until mid-March, when he was due to retire at age 75 but he resigned today.
"I have valued the opportunity of serving the people of Scotland and overseas in various ways since becoming a priest," Cardinal O'Brien said in a statement. "Looking back over my years of ministry, for any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologise to all whom I have offended."
The Vatican is to investigate the allegations.

Denrele's Tribute to Goldie

Goldie actually died in his arms. So you can imagine his pain.

"My super star friend sways away and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says "she's gone"...Gone where?Gone from my sight, that is all.

She is just as gorgeous now as when last I saw her. Her slightly disappearing figure and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her. And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she's gone, there are others who are watching her coming over their horizon and other voices take up a glad shout - There she comes! That is what dying is - A horizon and just the limit of our sight.

“As a matter of long standing practice, the Australian government does not comment on operational matters,” she said. Fairfax Media understands Mr Onwuhara had been living it up in Sydney after disappearing in August 2008.
