Former Washington Wizards center Jason Collins will receive the courage
award from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network for his decision
to announce his sexual orientation.
He declared his sexuality in a May 6 article for Sports Illustrated,
announcing: “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.” He will be presented with
the honor at a May 20 awards dinner.
"We are incredibly
proud to honor Jason Collins with our Courage Award," Dr. Eliza Byard,
GLSEN's Executive Director, said in a statement. "His decision to come out
is a game-changer for sports and will have a profound impact on the lives of
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, particularly those who
participate in or want to participate in athletics."
Collins is a free agent
after finishing the 2012-13 NBA season with the Washington Wizards. He also
played for the Boston Celtics during the season and has been in the NBA since
2001.
