Lydia Nsekera Becomes First Woman Elected to FIFA ExCo

 

Burundi’s Lydia Nsekera made history on Friday when she became the first woman to be elected to the Executive Committee of football’s world governing body FIFA for a full term.

Nsekera was voted on for a full four-year term at the FIFA Congress in Mauritius, while two other women, Moya Dodd of Australia and Sonia Bien-Aime of the Turks and Caicos Islands, were coopted on for one year.

Nsekera was the first woman to be co-opted on for one year at last year’s Congress in Budapest. Now there will be three women on the ExCo, compared to none two years ago. It is another step towards gender equality within FIFA, although there is still work to be done, with the ExCo comprising a total of 24 members.

“One woman was coopted on to the Executive Committee last year for one year, and now a woman has been officially elected on to the executive committee, with two others co-opted. It has taken us 109 years to get this far,” said FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Oprah Receives Honorary Degree from Harvard University

Oprah Winfrey received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University, on Thursday. The media mogul was obviously deeply touched by the commendation as she accepted the law degree with a few tears brimming in her eyes on the famous campus grounds in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The honour was bestowed upon the 59-year-old talk show host just hours before she was scheduled to give the featured commencement speech for the graduating class of 2013.

The billionaire brandished an irrepressible grin as she was paraded through the legendary Harvard Yard while both Ivy League professors and graduating students snapped mementos of the celebrity - who was dressed in the school's iconic black cap and crimson gown.

Families Of Abducted Pakistani Nationals Threaten To Kill Nigerians In Pakistan If Anything Happens To Them

Families of the five Pakistani nationals on board an oil vessel, Mt Matrix 1, abducted last Saturday at 40 nautical miles off the Bayelsa coast have told the management of the company, Matrix Energy, in Warri, Delta State, not to pay any ransom to the abductors to get them released, promising to take revenge on Nigerians in their hundreds in Pakistan, if any of the victims was killed.

The abducted victims include the Captain, Chief Officer, cook and two others. They were conveying automated gasoline oil, AGO, from Lagos to Eket, when they were abducted at 9pm.

Sources said that relevant security agencies in Bayelsa State and Warri in Delta State, had been informed of the incident. The source added  that the company had begun negotiation with the abductors, but that details of negotiations with the company on ransom were not disclosed.

Heartbroken Chinese Teenager Attempts Suicide by Jumping from Third-Floor Window!

A Chinese teenager who jumped from a third-floor window in a suicide bid after learning that her boyfriend is married was saved by a giant pillow.

The 19-year-old Chinese woman threatened to launch herself from the building after discovering her partner had a wife and a ten year old child. She clambered out onto a metal pole and threatened to jump.

Despite attempts to talk her down from the ledge in an apartment block in Hangzhou, capital of eastern China's Zhejiang Province, she thew herself from the block.

But meanwhile firefighters had set up a massive air cushion below and the woman landed safely, escaping uninjured.It is unclear whether the woman has intended to reach the pillow or if she had launched a genuine attempt on her life.

The air cushion measures roughly 6 metres by 7.5 metres and 2.75 metres high, and is capable of absorbing the shock of a body falling from 10 floors. More photos

Obama caught with lipstick on his collar! Blames it on the aunt of American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez.

President Obama wound up with an imprint of cherry-red lipstick on his shirt collar Tuesday night, which he was forced to explain in front of hundreds of people at a White House reception.

He arrived at the event, which was honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, ready to pin blame on someone other than Michelle for the unmistakable mark. Thanking the crowd for their warm greeting, he joked, 'a sign of that warmth is the lipstick on my collar.'

'I have to say I think I know the culprit,' he said, adding, 'Where is Jessica Sanchez?' As he scanned the crowd for Sanchez, the American Idol runner-up, he said, 'It wasn't Jessica - it was her aunt.' 'Auntie, right there, look at this,' he said, pointing to the smooch mark on his white button-down.

The crowd laughed and cheered. 'I just want everybody to witness,' he added. 'I do not want to be in trouble with Michelle. That's why I am calling you out right in front of everybody.'

Chinese baby is rescued ALIVE from Toilet Pipe after being flushed away by Parents

Firefighters in eastern China have rescued an abandoned newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe.  In the latest case the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday afternoon.

The harrowing discovery came after residents reported the sound of a baby crying, state television said late on Monday. The pipe was just four inches wide in diameter the China Daily newspaper said. Firefighters had to remove the pipe and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside, the report said.

Pakistani Women Make History As The First Muslim Lesbians to Marry in UK

She is my soul-mate and we love each other deeply. ‘It’s no one’s business as to what we do with our personal lives. A pair of Pakistani women have made history as the first Muslim lesbian couple to get married in the UK.

Rehana Kausar, 34, and Sobia Kamar, 29, made history when they tied the knot in a register office civil ceremony, then immediately applied for political asylum after they got married, claiming their lives would be in danger if they returned to their native country.

Watched by their solicitors and two friends, the pair wore traditional white bridal dresses when they were married in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

The pair, from the Lahore and Mirpur regions of Pakistan, said they had received death threats from opponents in Pakistan – where homosexual acts are illegal and considered against Islam.

And since news of their wedding earlier this month spread, the pair claimed they had even received death threats from the UK.

The New Bishop of Ahiara Diocese Most Rev Dr. Peter Okpaleke

The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI on December 7 2012 appointed Rev. Fr. Peter Ebere Okpaleke a clergy of the Catholic Diocese of Awka Diocese the new Bishop of Ahiara Diocese after the death of the pioneer bishop, Victor Chikwe.

However, the appointment of Okpalaeke was vehemently rejected by Priests and Catholic faithful from the Ahiara Diocese, who insisted on a native of Mbaise to be elected as bishop of the diocese. Not withstanding the crisis in the Diocese, he was installed as the Bishop of the diocese on the 21st of May 2013.

  

Born on March 1 1963 in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambara State, he studied philosophy and theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary Ikot Ekpene and Enugu respectively. He had his further studies at CIWA Port Harcourt and at the Holy Cross University Rome where he bagged a doctorate degree in Canon Law in 2011. Upon his return to the diocese, he was appointed Judge at the Inter-Diocesan Tribunal of Onitsha and the Parish Priest of Sts John and Paul Parish, Umubele, Awka Diocese.

The body of late literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe arrived Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport Abuja, earlier today May 21, where it was received by government officials. The body was then moved to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and was received by his elder brother, Augustine Achebe, and other family members; the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Amechi Okolo; some Enugu State commissioners; and different cultural troupes from Ogidi.
