An Indian high court overturned
Bollywood actor Salman Khan's conviction in a 13-year-old hit-and-run case, thereby
scrapping a lower court's sentence of five years in jail.
Khan
49, who was accused of driving drunk in 2002 and ramming into a group of homeless
people sleeping on a city sidewalk, killing one and injuring four was found guilty
of culpable homicide by a Mumbai criminal court in May 2015.
On
Thursday, Justice A. R. Joshi ruled that the testimony of the state's star
witness was not "wholly reliable", and that the prosecution had not
been able to prove that Khan was drunk at the time of the accident. Khan therefore
has been acquitted. Prosecutors said they had not decided whether to challenge verdict.
